During World War II Freddie served in Palestine as Lieutenant, and then Captain, in the Intelligence Corps. There, he improved his spoken Arabic, though he later recalled that, when caught off guard, he was still capable of answering the shouts of boys in the street with literary expressions, which resulted in surprise and merriment.
