Freddie joined the staff of the Bodleian in 1935, while he was still working on his D.Phil, and served first as Senior Assistant and later, after demobilisation in 1946, as Keeper of Oriental Books and Sub-Librarian. He was responsible for the completion of the card catalogues of all the Arabic, Persian and Armenian printed books; and in 1954 he completed the Catalogue of the Persian, Turkish, Hindustani and Pushtu Manuscripts in the Bodleian Library. Part III. Additional Persian Manuscripts . He also wrote several articles on items in the collections (Arabic, Persian, Chinese), and acquired for the library a number of important oriental manuscripts. After he left the library, he continued to make generous donations from his own resources to enable the Bodleian to acquire important oriental manuscripts.
