FRIDAY 22 JULY 2005 - FREDDIE BEESTON DAY

As many of you will be aware 2005 marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Professor A.F.L. Beeston. 'Freddie', as he was known to his numerous friends and colleagues, took part in the Seminar for many years and contributed many papers. He was also one of the longest serving members of the Steering Committee.

To mark this anniversary, the Committee have decided to dedicate the Friday of the Seminar (July 22, 2005) to a celebration of Freddie's memory. The day will begin with a brief reminiscence, followed by papers on the three areas in which he made his principal contributions to scholarship: the Arabic language, Arabic literature, and the epigraphy of pre-Islamic Arabia. The papers will be of the normal 20-minutes, followed by 5 minutes of discussion.

BOOKING FORM FOR SEMINAR AND ACCOMMODATION

Dear Colleague

Please for a booking form and accommodation information for this year’s Seminar. The conference fee for the three days is £75 or £30 for individual days (the fee for Friends of the British Museum is £40 (£15 per day) and students £20 for three days (£10 per day)).

Due to increased pressures on accommodation in London, especially in July, only a limited number of rooms have been reserved this year at Astor College ( and NOT in Ramsay Hall as previously stated) . The cost of bed and breakfast is £32.00 per night. As rooms are limited it is important to book as soon as possible.

Please make sure we have your booking form and payment by 31st of May at the latest. Unfortunately booking fees are non-refundable.

The Seminar for Arabain Studies is keen to encourage individuals that wish to present posters at the Seminar. If you are interested in offering a poster at this year’s Seminar please contact the Secretary.

The Seminar for Arabian Studies is a non-profit making organisation and we do our very best to kept costs to participants as low as possible. As such, the Committee very much regrets that conference fees must be paid by all, including those presenting papers. Please let us know if you require a letter of invitation or for visa purposes.

We very much look forward to seeing you at the Seminar in July.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Derek Kennet (Chair)
Dr Ardle Mac Mahon (Secretary)
