Freddie with Robert and Carole Hillenbrand and Dr Abd al-Wahhab Raweh, at a dinner party given by Julia Bray in Edinburgh in 1991. Freddie greatly enjoyed good food and drink and especially good company. His 'Schools Dinners', when he wined and dined his students after their final exams, were legendary, and an invitation to dine with him at St John's was always a treat. He was also an excellent cook himself, as those who were lucky enough to be invited to his house in Tree Lane, Iffley, can attest. His sense of humour could be alternately subtle and uproarious and his laugh - which usually ended in an appalling smoker's cough - could be heard from far away.
