Freddie in characteristically relaxed dress at the conference in Sanaa in 1981. It was his habit to travel with only a briefcase, which mainly contained his papers and a carton of cigarettes. This could sometimes cause consternation to members of reception committees who would search fruitlessly in the baggage-reclaim areas of airports for 'Professor Beeston's suitcase', only to find that he did not have one. This photograph was used as the frontispiece to Sayhadica , the Festschrift presented to Freddie in 1987. Previous - Next © Seminar for Arabian Studies 2006.
